Kids love food! Because of that learning about the food groups was super fun. We talked about the different groups and how America has organized them through the years.
We played a game with 'The Plate'. In groups, students glued paper plates onto 'place mats' and drew lines and labeled the different food categories. We used a virtual spinner and each group took turns spinning. If they got vegetable, they could draw any veggie they wanted in that category. If they spun a category that they already had, their turn was skipped. It was really fun for all!
I like the pyramid way to organize the food groups, because dairy is not considered only a liquid. We all colored different foods and organized them into the different groups.
Brain Pop Jr. Also has some great videos to go along with healthy eating. They are called 'Food Groups', 'Eating Right' and 'Sugar'. You have to have a membership to access this great site. This is also where I got the virtual spinner.
