I can be pretty disorganized, but I do have a few ideas to share! My 'Teacher Area'I don't have a large nice shelf behind my reading table/next to my computer... I just have a sundry of organizational things all stacked up on top of each other, which has actually worked out great! Reading TableDon't have much storage space around your reading group area? Find some hanging shelves (typically used in a pantry) and hang them under the table. This hanging shelf was purchased from Lowes for around $6.00. Student Letters and Drawings My students give me drawings and letters constantly. I feel bad throwing them away and I am unable to hand them up around the room due to space constraints. So I have come up with a 'scrapbook'! I have a notebook filled with page protectors, and whenever I get a little letter I stick it inside. When students ask where I put their work, I just say, 'In the scrapbook'! Lunch & Computer CardsI don't know about your classroom but I could never find my stack of lunch cards when it was lunch time, they were always under a stack of papers somewhere! So this year I started using a Target dollar section pocket chart with number labels, and it has worked wonders! One of my students job is to organize these cards each day behind their classroom number. (I wrote their number on the back of the card in sharpie) The pocket chart behind this one is the same thing only with computer cards (Log-in) info. My two 'computer consultants' organize those each time we go to computer lab. Extras DrawerThis seems simple, but it has really cut down paper clutter! I got this idea from my student teaching cooperating teacher. When my paper passers have any extra papers they just stick them in this drawer. This way if I have a student that has 'lost' homework, another teacher needs another copy, etc you can just go to this drawer! EditablesIf you are anything like me, you have to snack! I keep all food and food related items in one area. A desk works great to get a fridge up off the floor and provides a little storage for silverware, plates, cups, etc. Turning in PapersThis is a set of cheap plastic drawers that are spray painted and paper modge-podged on the inside. It doesn't look as stelar as it did in its glory days, but it still does the trick! When the kids are finished they put their work in whichever drawer I announce at the beginning of independent work. When my aid comes in she knows to grab from these drawers. Magnetic LettersI have found that tupperware is the best thing to use to organize letters! They are in sets so that two kids will share one box. It is easily gotten out, put away, and stored.
This is a brand new classroom! I love all of the space, and cabinets! This huge leaf really adds to our classroom atmosphere! The kids love it. Here is some of our classroom library. The books are organized by category or author. There is a label on the back of each book indicating which box the book belongs. I do not do any cleaning or organizing in the library, my kids keep it consistently clean. This is a reading tree! It is a brown sheet wrapped around a wooden embroidery hoop hanging over an ottoman. I wanted to have a bunch of leaves on this tree... but it was low on the priority list. So now, it is a tree in winter! This will be my carpet area... when we get a carpet! This board will be my CAFE board, and a weekly letter to my kids.
